ACCESSIBILITY AND UTILISATION OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AMONG PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT II, LAGOS STATE

Abstract

Students in a variety of educational settings rely on assistive technology, which is a dynamic resource that
extends far beyond the confines of specialised educational settings. All schools are expected to utilise assistive technology since the implementation of inclusive education. This study investigated the accessibility and utilisation of assistive technology among public primary school teachers in Educational District II, Lagos State.
A descriptive survey research design was used in the study. Forty-eight respondents, including six teachers purposefully selected from each of the eight randomly selected schools within the eight partitioned communities in Shomolu LGA, Educational District II, participated in the study, which was guided by four hypotheses. For data collection, experts validated a self-designed questionnaire and checklist. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation test with a significance level of .05 was used to examine the relationships between variables, and descriptive statistics were used by the researchers to analyse the collected data. The findings demonstrated a significant correlation between the availability and ease of use of assistive technology by public primary school teachers in Education District II. However, it was determined that while assistive technology is widely used in public primary schools in Education District II, its availability is low. To improve the learning of children, particularly those who require it, it was suggested, among other things, that sufficient assistive technology be made available in public schools by the government, non-governmental organisations, and others.
